GEN - Frequently Asked Questions

Here at Growing Edge Network, we cater to a diverse group of students. From the technomancers and Transhumanists, to  seekers, neopagans and people just new to the net and online learning. Here are a list of frequent questions that are asked by new students.

General Questions

1. I've never tried online classes before, can my Internet Connection and Computer run your site?

This is probably the toughest question on this list. This site follows internet standards and any modern browser/computer can make use of the full site and all of the online learning tools. However, some classes do make use of multimedia, particularly audio and video which may take a very long time to access on low speed internet connections. If you choose to take a course and do not have high speed internet, you may not be able to participate in many of the multimedia resources throughout the class. Some classes do not make use of any multimedia, but that is the exception, rather than the rule. If you would like to take a class and need to know if multimedia is a big part of it, contact us via the "Need Help?" link and we'll ask the instructor ahead of time.

2. I would like to take a class, but I need help with the scholarship program. How do I contact a human being?

Use the "Need Help?" link, and select "GENSales" rather than Support for your ticket. That will route the ticket directly to the good folks who can help you with scholarships, partial scholarships ans special financing programs.  The Tech Support team will just have to forward your ticket if you send it to them, which will delay the response.

3. I just signed up for a course... Now What?!

First, make sure you have a working user account here at Growing Edge Network. If you don't then go make one now... we'lll wait. Ok, back? Good!

Now that you have a working account, relax... you won't have to do anything until the day before the class. Our classes start on  Monday, so on the Sunday before class starts you will receive an email with your Enrollment Key. Log in, find the courses or classroom link and enter the class environment. Select the class you enrolled in from the list and click the link to enter. You will be prompted for your Enrollment Key the first time you enter the class. After that, you'll be able to enterand the system will know that you are enrolled.

4. I paid for the class before creating an account! Can I still get in?

Yes. The enrollment email will be sent to the email address tied to your PayPal transaction. So as long as you can receive than email, you'll be able to get into the class.

5. I don't know how to use the Internet. Can you teach me?

Sorry, no... we're awfully busy around here and we don't have classes on how to use the net... at least not yet. We recommend the site http://www.internettutorials.net which will guide you through some of the basics about the Net, how to get around on web pages and how to make use of basic web technology. We try to make the site as direct and simple as possible, but the Net is a new medium and 'simple' is pretty subjective. ;-)

However, the answer to a lot of questions can be summed up with "Look at the page and click the "link" (a link is generally a different color than the rest of the text and your mouse pointer will switch to a different look when you hover over it). For example, if you want to reply to a forum message in class, find the "Reply" link and click it. Also take a look at our Classroom Demo and Tutorials. Some schools in our network may also have a brief introduction, so be sure to check the menus for Introductions if you're looking for help.

6. I can't login! What should I do?

Open a ticket by clicking the "Need Help?" link. When you aren't logged in, the ticket system will generate a temporary id and password. This ID can only be used at http://www.growingedgenetwork.com as a way to check your ticket, or read replies from tech support. Sometimes the automated 'password reset' doesn't work due to spam filters or ISP's that are blocking some kinds of automated messaging. If you try it and don't see an email immediately, please just open a ticket.

7.  I opened a ticket but I haven't gotten a response yet. Does it take more than an hour or so?

Yes. We try to get responses to tickets within 24 hours of them being opened. However, we have a very small staff and occasionally tickets may take a bit longer to get responded to. If its the first day of a new class, we generally get a response back to you within twelve hours.

8. I want to download the multimedia from the site to my own computer. How do I do that?

By default, you cannot download the multimedia. We do not allow direct downloads unless the instructor explicitly asks for it.
